Have you ever experienced a peace that surpasses understanding? In November of 2011, just a few months after my wife passed away, I endured my second heart attack. During the next 28 minutes, I was in full code; my body did not respond to any of the medical interventions the code team performed. During this time, my family and many hospital employees stood outside my room, praying for a miracle. After getting a flutter of a heartbeat back and being transported to another hospital to undergo a procedure, I finally regained consciousness. I will never forget the overwhelming sense of peace that I experienced in that room. It was clear and evident that the Prince of Peace was at my bedside. I felt assured at that moment that I was going to be fine.
In this passage, Jesus knows that his disciples are scared and anxious for his crucifixion. He shows deep love and affection for his disciples when he assures them that though the world may not be able to provide peace, he will give them peace. Jesus never promises us that our lives will be without fear, anxiety, and troubles. Jesus, himself, experienced hardships and these same emotions throughout his life. I find great hope knowing that despite the challenges that life presents, Jesus will provide us with peace. While we may not experience peace in our circumstances, Jesus promises we can find peace in him.
At times, our hearts may feel extra troubled during the Christmas season due to a variety of challenges. I encourage you to pray for the peace that Jesus offers us in this scripture. May you experience this peace and the presence of Jesus during this season of Advent.
