The Invitation to the Table

Keith Longmire

Scripture Reading: Luke 14:15–24 (The Parable of the Great Banquet)

So, what is the meaning of this Scripture? Jesus, telling the story of the Great Banquet, indicates the invitation to God’s salvation was offered, but many times it was rejected or not followed by the original group invited. Many made excuses and did not follow this opportunity. The invitation then was given to others, especially the poor and less fortunate, to come to the banquet. The first invitation was given most likely to the more well-to-do in society, but they found other things to do, turning down the invitation and making the host of the banquet angry. He declared not to have them attend and went out to find others, not in the same social class as the first invited, to come partake.

So, what does this mean? It means all are welcome and encouraged to accept the teachings of Jesus—not just according to a person’s status in society. God offers salvation to all freely, regardless of class or perceived worthiness. Many times, people preoccupied with things of the world will not willingly accept the responsibilities that go along with accepting the Word of God. Accepting these responsibilities requires a commitment to follow Jesus.

The host of the banquet found this out, and we need to remember that today—let us help those in society follow or encourage them to turn to Jesus. Let us help the unfortunate, the poor, the rich, or whoever, turn to the teachings of Jesus and apply that to our lives today. God’s kingdom is open to everyone.

Prayer: Jesus, I confess I’ve made excuses. I’ve let distractions pull me from your invitation. Forgive me for treating your grace like an afterthought. Thank you for still wanting me—for welcoming me with love I haven’t earned. Teach me to live with gratitude, not entitlement. Help me invite others as you have me—with open arms and an open heart. Let my life reflect the mercy of your banquet, where everyone has a seat. Amen.
