Scripture: Luke 2:15-20

In interviewing Karen Catlett about her best Christmas memory about the Joy she had while growing up, she explained that her family lived in Richmond, VA, and had to drive two hours to her grandparents’ home every Christmas Eve. Her family consisted of her parents and her brother Kevin. This did this from the time they were 8- and 11-year-old.

They did this custom each year until she turned 18. Her Grandma and Grandpa Horn were there plus her Aunt Kathy

The family went to their Christmas Eve Service at the church and then came home to a wonderful dinner. They all went to bed and awakened Christmas morning to have breakfast at 8 a.m. They had a full country breakfast of eggs, bacon, ham – the works. Then, they opened gifts. They had gifts from Santa and in their stockings.

Karen remembers the nice smell of evergreens, the smell of good food. Her family stayed for 2 days before going home. She smiled and said, “You could just feel the joy!” Family and love give a wonderful feeling of joy to those who experience it.

This Advent season many will not experience this feeling. Memories of family bring pain. The only love they might feel is the love that you or I will show them in a smile or nod. How can you spread the joy of Christmas with those around you, even strangers? Be open to the Lord’s leading each and every day.

Karen Catlett has been a Sonshine Member for a long time and always reflects JOY often when she is around others. (Written by Harriet Carter)
