A Journey of Remembrance and Hope

As we move into November, our church steps onto a sacred, well-worn path—one that leads us through remembrance, gratitude, reflection and anticipation. From All Saints Day to the brink of Advent, we’re invited on a journey connecting us deeply to those who have come before us and to the hope that awaits. Proverbs 4:18 reminds us, “the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.” Let’s commit to that path together.

For All the Saints
On November 3, we’ll gather for All Saints Sunday to honor the “cloud of witnesses” (Heb. 12:1) who have shaped our faith. This year, we’re blessed to have Mackenzie Smith share a message that remembers our faithful forebears, whose lives continue to inspire Yates Baptist Church. Their legacy is a reminder of God’s enduring presence among us. In honor of these saints, both living and departed, you may contribute poinsettias to grace our sanctuary this Advent—an expression of appreciation that fills our worship space with beauty and meaning. Please note that the deadline for poinsettias is approaching.

Supporting Each Other Through the Holidays
We also recognize how difficult the holidays can be for those grieving a loved one’s loss. To support this journey, Yates Baptist and GriefShare will hold “Surviving the Holidays,” an online seminar, on Saturday, November 23, from 10 AM to Noon via Zoom. This gathering offers practical support, insights from counselors and community understanding for navigating the season. A $5 Survival Guide, available at registration, offers added support. Register at GriefShare.org/holidays under “Yates Baptist Church” or call Betty at (919) 491-9875 for more information.

Gathering in Gratitude and Anticipation
Our Thanksgiving worship will be a special time for reflection and gratitude. From Sunday evening, November 24, through Black Friday on November 29, we’ll offer multiple broadcasts—6 PM on Sunday and Wednesday, 11 AM and 2 PM on Thanksgiving Day and 2 PM on Friday. This is more than a broadcast. It is an invitation to worship and celebrate with the entire church family. Led by our youth, children’s ministry, Sonshine community, Yates orchestra and adult choir, these services bring us together in gratitude. Whether you’re with family, alone or in another setting, Yates welcomes you to worship and connect. The Lord’s Supper reminds us that wherever we are, we’re bound together in Christ’s love.

The Turn of the Year
Now, don’t get confused—this isn’t about the December 31st New Year’s countdown! We’re talking about the church calendar’s grand finale: Christ the King/Reign of Christ Sunday. Danny Steis will bring a sermon that marks the end of our liturgical year, right before Advent begins. It’s like a spiritual reset button, a moment when we pause and reflect on Christ’s ultimate lordship. Think of it as an annual check-in prompted by the Holy Spirit—an invitation to review, renew, and realign our lives with God’s kingdom vision so we can move ever closer to the time when God’s will is done “on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10).

How are we living within Christ’s reign in our daily choices? As a church, how can we more fully embody the unity and purpose Paul describes in Ephesians 4:15-16: “…Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

Get Ready!
As November draws to a close, our hearts turn to Advent—a season of anticipation and readiness. Thanks to Lynn Odom’s dedicated work, our Advent devotionals are ready. Receive daily reflections in print or by signing up for email installments; contact the church office at info@yateschurch.org to join. Even if Advent has begun, you’re always welcome.

This season, from All Saints to Advent, is more than dates on a calendar. It’s a time when memory and hope converge, inviting us to remember those who came before and to anticipate Christ’s coming. Each gathering, in remembrance, thanksgiving or expectation, calls us to deepen our faith, strengthen our community and draw closer to God.

Don’t let the opportunities to grow together pass you by. Engage fully. Remember deeply. Give thanks abundantly. Anticipate expectantly.

May God’s grace and peace meet you in every step of this remarkable month!

Grace and Peace,
A drawing of a face
