With June comes the summer, and Ecclesiastes reminds us that “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens.” (3:1) Right now, I’m still celebrating May’s many joys, like infant dedication, Mother’s Day, Sonshine Sunday and Graduate Sunday. We concluded the month with a reflective Memorial Day weekend marked by baptism’s promises of renewal. As the season changes, celebrate what God might do in the many opportunities around.
A Time to Laugh: Honoring Fathers on 16
“A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance.” (Eccl. 3:4)
Father’s Day is our moment to celebrate dads with the joy they deserve. It’s when we remember the dad jokes that make us groan and smile, like the classic, “I’m reading a book on anti-gravity. It’s impossible to put it down!” But it’s also a day to look beyond the humor and appreciate the men who’ve shaped us—our fathers. Let’s honor their wisdom, love, and the quiet strength they’ve shown in being our dads (whoever you have grown to call dad). Here’s to the fathers of Yates, for the laughter and lessons they’ve given us, and a chance to celebrate them in worship this month.
A Time to Scatter Stones: Setting Out on Summer Adventures
“A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them.” (Eccl. 3:5)
As we step into the season of scattering stones, many in our Yates family are beginning their summer travels. Our youth and children are setting off to Passport camps, ready to scatter joy and gather new experiences. And as for the rest of us? We’re hitting the road, the skies, and maybe even the seas to scatter stones of curiosity and gather memories. I’ll pray for you—and share the “Traveler’s Prayer” attributed to St. Christopher, my namesake (though I’m still waiting for my sainthood nomination): “Grant me, O Lord, a steady hand and watchful eye. That no one shall be hurt as I pass by.” Whether you’re scattering to the mountains, the beach or some far-away city, remember that each stone of experience beautifies our spiritual mosaic. Safe travels, Yates. Don’t forget to send a postcard to your favorite Christopher at home!
A Time to Keep: Sharing Beyond Loneliness
“A time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away.” (Eccl. 3:6)
In our summer journey with Trevor Hudson’s Beyond Loneliness, let’s keep the cherished fellowship that defines Yates Baptist Church and throw away the solitude that separates us. This church-wide book study is more than reading; it’s a shared spiritual journey that strengthens the bonds of our community. In coffee gatherings, living room discussions, or virtual meetups, we unite in fellowship and reflection. Here at Yates, where togetherness is our cornerstone, let’s embrace this collective exploration, finding belonging and purpose in every page turned together.
A Time to Plant: Growing Together in Stewardship
“A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.” (Eccl. 3:2)
At Yates, we’re planting something new, both in our gardens and ourselves. Our composting initiative is a collective journey in environmental care, embodying our faith in tangible, eco-conscious actions. It’s more than sustainability; it’s following heeding the scriptural call to steward our world. Through small steps, we can transform scraps into sustenance for future generations, and honor the God who has so faithfully provided for us. Join us on this path of discovery and fellowship, as we act on our beliefs and see God’s earth flourish.
A Time to Heal: Stepping Forward with Hope
“A time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up.” (Eccl. 3:3)
In the ebb and flow of life at Yates, we are blessed with seasons that challenge and seasons that renew. As we navigate these times, let’s embrace the healing that comes with each step forward. This is an invitation to ongoing reflection, to support one another, and to grow in grace. May you find strength and joy in the journey ahead, and may our shared experiences continue to be a source of blessing and encouragement.
Grace & Peace,
