The Invitation to Wisdom
Keith Longmire
Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:24–27 (The Parable of the Two Builders)
The words of this Scripture are very important at any time of the year, not just at Easter. The meaning is simple: Hear and obey God’s Word. This is the way to live.
This Scripture is related to construction techniques, which apply to our beliefs according to Jesus’ teachings. Houses built on solid foundations can withstand the hard elements that nature can unleash better than houses built on weak foundations, such as sand.
The sand in this parable represents this: People who follow Jesus are like the wise man who builds on a solid foundation (the solid rock) and therefore follow the lessons of Jesus and can live with him forever. The foolish builder who pays no attention to the foundation will eventually see his building collapse. He does not follow the teachings of Jesus and therefore will not have the tools necessary to enter the kingdom of heaven—unless he changes his building techniques (beliefs and applications). The sands shift, there is nothing solid to land on, and collapse is inevitable (kind of like the houses at the very end of North Topsail falling into the ocean).
Let us all remember to have solid foundations with Jesus. Let us build upon his teachings and the lessons he has given us at all times of the year.
Prayer: Jesus, you are my solid rock. When the wind rises and the ground shifts beneath me, help me stand firm in your truth. Teach me to build my life on your words—not just to hear them, but to live them. Shape my heart, steady my faith, and strengthen my foundation, so that, come what may, I remain fixed on you. Amen.
