Scripture: Luke 2:1-5

Christmas Eve is a special kind of anticipation. We remember God’s promises, from creation’s dawn to this moment filled with meaning in Jesus. The Jesse Tree guides us through God’s great story—Abraham’s covenant, David’s kingship and the prophets’ call to hope. All these threads braid together into a strong cord binding heaven to earth as we await the birth of the Savior, the Prince of Peace.

Peace? Christmas Eve, with its joys, can often seem far from peaceful. Even if all tasks are completed, an empty chair may linger at the dinner table. You might long to be elsewhere, carrying the weight of regrets and unanswered questions. With busy minds and hearts, it’s rarely a “Silent Night.”

Step outside the noise—whether internal or external—long enough to come alongside two travelers on their pilgrimage for God. Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem reflects simple faith. Mary trusted the angel’s message, and Joseph heeded God’s direction.

I say “simple,” but I do not mean “easy.” Their obedience shines with a clarity that stands apart from the chaos around them. Their faithfulness to each other and their shared commitment to welcome the new life entrusted to their care by God reveal an inspiring spiritual resolve. It shines as brightly as the star that will soon rest above the manger!

We know uncertain times can feel overwhelming and exhausting. Uncertainty is the shadow side of anticipation. Be encouraged and remember that God works in such uncertain times—and through ordinary people—for extraordinary purposes. What might God do in you if, like Mary and Joseph, you prayed the simplest prayer in the world this Christmas? What is that prayer, you ask?

Bow your head, close your eyes, and repeat after me: “Yes!”

Christopher Ingram anticipates Christmas Day with Jeanell and their 3 sons.
