Scripture: Matthew 3:1-6
When I read this passage, I am immediately reminded of the musical Godspell. The character that represents John the Baptist begins the show by singing one of the most memorable pieces, “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord.” In the movie adaptation (very much a product of the 70s!), the story begins with individuals in New York City hearing John singing and assembling at a fountain. There, John baptizes them as they sing in joyous unison about the coming of Christ.
John preached about the arrival of the Kingdom of Heaven and baptized those who were willing to repent. As we celebrate Jesus’ birth, we are reminded that he will come again. We are still called to prepare for the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven.
What is this Kingdom of Heaven? We don’t know exactly. It’s not a physical kingdom, but rather God’s will manifested throughout His creation. I believe we can experience the Kingdom of Heaven in the places and times where God’s love and justice can be found. By making a positive impact on those around us — seeking justice, creating peace, sharing God’s love — we are causing the will of God to be realized. John called the people to prepare the way for the Lord — Jesus was not going to do all of this work himself. We are called to prepare for Jesus’ return. If we pursued Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven with the same excitement and love as the disciples in Godspell, what would that mean for our families? Our nation? The world?
As Christmas approaches,
Oh, Dear Lord
Three things I pray
To see thee more clearly
Love thee more dearly
Follow thee more nearly
Day by day
